The Vrabči Homestead in the village of Pliskovica in the Slovenian Karst region (Kras) is a family farm with a longstanding tradition of making different types of schnapps, brandy, liquors and wines, of which the Teran wine is the most distinguished. Brothers Ivo and Edi Šuc continue this tradition and set themselves the mission of bringing the Karst in its most original sense closer to the public at large. In this tiny part of the Earth, the astonishing landscape demands from us particular self-sacrifice, as the Karst soil is not a land of plenty. It is wild, stubborn, demanding. Many might give up hope and fall into despair, but those who know how to listen to the land are lavishly repaid. Thus, the two brothers try to follow the land’s rhythm. They come to the land open-armed, showing respect for what it is and what it represents. They are convinced that as long as people respect nature, they will be richly rewarded. The production and processing of nature’s gifts is a meticulous and painstaking proposition. There is very little mechanical production and treatment, a lot needs to be done by hand, and this is why the Karst farmers’ hands are so coarse and chapped, and the look on their faces so grateful. The herbs often found in schnapps and brandy are picked and selected by hand. It feels special, according to Edi and Ivo, to work together with nature and allow it to lead you. They consider it a privilege, one that they would like to share with other people; their desire is to ‘capture’ the essence of the Karst in a colorful palette of schnapps, brandies, liquors, and wines, and bring it to your homes.
